Paradise Lost

Uriel

Also known as: Arch-Angel Uriel · Family: Heaven · Role: archangel · First appears: Book 3

In Book 3, Uriel, one of the seven archangels nearest God’s throne, serves as God’s eyes and carries his errands through Heaven and Earth. Though regent of the sun and described as the sharpest-sighted spirit in Heaven, he is beguiled by Satan’s deceptive appearance and speech. At Paradise, Uriel tells Satan that the place is Earth and Adam’s abode.

In Book 4, Uriel reports to Gabriel that a spirit who came to his sphere at noon seemed alien from Heaven and may have entered Eden to raise trouble; he says his eye pursued the spirit but lost sight of him under shade. In Book 6, fighting alongside Raphael, Uriel helps defeat Adramelech and Asmadai in Heaven’s battle.
