In Book II, Chaos sits as umpire, with Chance beside him as high arbiter, while Night is his consort and shares his throne. When Satan reaches his throne in the Abyss seeking directions toward Heaven’s border, Chaos directs him, warning that the route brings danger and saying, “Havoc, and spoil, and ruin, are my gain.”
